Snow in Serra da Estrela: all sections of the central massif reopened

Access to the central massif of Serra da Estrela is now passable again today through all its arteries, a Civil Protection source told the Lusa agency.

According to the Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of Beiras and Serra da Estrela, sections 11 (Piornos-Torre), 12 (Torre-Torre) and 13 (Torre-Lagoa Comprida) were reopened around 8 am: 00.

The three sections had been closed to traffic since 5pm on Friday, due to snowfall.

Sections 1 and 2 of the Serra da Estrela central massif had already been reopened to traffic on Saturday afternoon.

The districts of Bragança, Viseu, Vila Real, Braga, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Guarda and Castelo Branco were under yellow warning until 09:00 on Saturday morning, due to forecasts of snowfall, reported the Instituto Português do Mar and of Atmosphere (IPMA).

The IPMA warned of forecasts of snowfall above 1,100 meters or 1,200 meters, depending on the district, also predicting snow accumulation to vary between five centimeters and 10 centimeters.
