PRIO started this month with the transport of liquid fuels by rail, between the Port of Aveiro and Sines, which will allow dozens of trucks to be removed from the roads every month, it has now been announced.

In a statement, the Port of Aveiro clarified that the Liquid Bulk Terminal received, on April 18, the first of two trains of the new regular biofuel distribution service, inaugurated by PRIO.

“This first rail service was completed the following day and consisted of a total of two trains loaded with 720 tons of biofuel each, produced from waste in the PRIO Novas Energias complex located in the Port of Aveiro”, states the same note.

According to the Port of Aveiro, this new service will run regularly, every month, and comes in line with the joint efforts of PRIO and the Port of Aveiro to reduce the carbon footprint.

Quoted in the same note, the president of the board of directors of the Port of Aveiro, Eduardo Feio, highlighted the importance of the first commercial use of the bundle of lines at the Port of Aveiro’s Liquid Bulk Terminal for the decarbonization of transport, adding that “this first train allows 26 trucks to be removed from the road between the Port of Aveiro and Sines and transport their cargo on an electric train”.

The official also highlighted that with this rail service, the Port of Aveiro will continue to reinforce its position as “an important multimodal logistics hub at European level”.

For his part, Luís Nunes, director of Prio Supply, said that the company has sought to innovate and decarbonize at all stages of the supply chain, from the production phase to delivery of the final product to customers.

“What we feel from the market is that there is an increase in demand for quality and more environmentally friendly fuels. It is a great sign that the market has given regarding the energy transition and PRIO has responded”, she concluded.

Considered the largest producer of biofuels in Portugal and one of the largest European producers of biodiesel from waste raw materials, PRIO ensures the flow of these biofuels through a network of more than 250 service stations from North to South of the country.

To ensure its competitiveness in liquid fuels and Autogas, PRIO operates an independent storage and primary logistics terminal in Aveiro, through which it can supply the international market. To ensure the supply of its biodiesel factory on the national market, PRIO coordinates the collection of used cooking oils and other residual raw materials in more than 600 collection points in Portugal.
