Tondela will celebrate, for the second year, National Tile Day, which is celebrated annually on May 6th (Monday).

The municipality will celebrate the event with the organization of the “Rota Azulejar em Tondela”, a route through the city center that will showcase part of the local tile heritage. The itinerary will include some works signed with the factory’s seal, but also pieces by authors, namely Jorge Colaço and Pedro de Figueiredo.

Tondela’s tile heritage is almost entirely part of the movement Art Nouveau. The city presents relevant examples of this artistic creation in the form of coating or partial decoration on the facades and interiors of buildings. The script will include examples of bucolic and religious scenes, hagiographic records, votive panels and historic ashlars.

The “Rota Azulejar” will be aimed at the general public and will include the figurative and artistic description of the panels and an explanation of Art Nouveau and its appearance in Portugal, as well as a brief historical and biographical note about some authors/ceramists.

National Tile Day was established in 2017 with the aim of recognizing this national tradition and heritage, while reminding the population to value, care and preserve it.
