Synopsis
It is always risky to revisit a classic, especially when it has already been revisited by another author. However, it seemed essential, in light of these days, to revisit Antigone — that of Sophocles and that of Carson —, presenting Antigonick. In the Greek classic, Antigone is sentenced to death after violating one of Creon’s edicts, which prevented her from giving a dignified burial to her brother, Polyneices, considered a traitor.
It could be considered a play about mourning and the moral responsibility we have towards the dead, but the viewer is not fooled. Antigonick is, beyond that, a call for civil disobedience when we are governed by tyrants, because there is a radical difference between justice and legality and because every autocratic plan must be fought with an unshakable will.
