CRATO CITY COUNCIL MAINTAINS ASBESTOS ROOFINGS AND UNWORTHY FACILITIES

This Sunday (28th) marks National Occupational Prevention and Safety Day, but there are still many workers in Local Government and concessionary companies who carry out their daily activities in conditions that are harmful to their safety and health.

This is the case of the workers at the Crato City Council, with whom, this Monday, STAL is promoting a public complaint action.

STAL promotes a plenary with workers from the Municipality of Crato in which the form of struggle that will force the improvement of working conditions in that municipality will be decided, which, among other serious situations, keeps workers exposed to asbestos coverings, and where changing rooms and dining space are unworthy.

Following the meeting, workers will parade between the Municipal Auditorium and the Town Hall, to deliver a Resolution with their demands, and will place a protest banner in the center of the town.

Four days after the 25th of April, and especially in the year in which the 50th anniversary of the Revolution is celebrated, it is important to invoke, from the outset, Article 59 of the Constitution of the Republic: “All workers (…) have the right : (…) Provision of work under hygiene, safety and health conditions.”

Although much has already been done, unfortunately, there is still a long way to go to improve working conditions, the only way to guarantee healthy and safe working environments.

In the Local Government sector, there are huge asymmetries in working conditions, with several local authorities that, quite simply, ignore their responsibilities and obligations as a public employer, with regard to the promotion of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). .

This reality also exists in concessionary and service provider companies, to which, to a large extent, the public procurement policy based on lower prices contributes, which end up being reflected in disinvestment and the degradation of well-being and security. of the workers.

LABOR ACCIDENT AT ADM. LOCAL

In Local Administration, labor accidents are evidenced in the social reports delivered by municipalities. As all municipal social reports (308) are not available, in the preliminary analysis carried out by STAL on 250 of these instruments, relating to 2022, 7611 work accidents are recorded (1626 more than those recorded by 254 municipalities in 2021). And of these, 6214 required sick leave (+1137 compared to 2021), resulting in a total of 369,704 days of work lost.

With the national rate of occupational accidents reaching 5.4% (+0.7% compared to 2021), 88.9% of accidents (6763) occurred in the workplace, while 11.1% (848) occurred on the way to work.

This Sunday, which marks the National Day for Prevention and Safety at Work, STAL reaffirms its commitment to Local Government workers and the country in the fight and demand for better working conditions; for full compliance with the Legal Regime for the promotion of Safety and Health at Work; for the fair payment of a remuneration supplement for hardship, unhealthy work and risk; for the repeal of the Law that limits access to pensions for those injured in the Public Administration; through professional training; by valuing collective bargaining and respect for union intervention; demands whose fulfillment is essential to the construction of safe and healthy workplaces and the socio-professional dignity of those who contribute so much to the public good.

In the 50th anniversary of the Revolution of April 25, 1974, STAL values the advances and achievements achieved, reaffirming that it will continue and intensify the fight to ensure that the right of all workers to age healthily is respected and assured, as this is fulfill April.
