The “aMar a Terra” itineraries are an initiative by CCDR Algarve, IP – Agriculture and Fisheries that aims to publicize investment projects in the Algarve region in the areas of agri-food and the sea economy and which are supported by European funds. According to a statement from the CCDR, “they are examples of contributions to territorial cohesion and diversification of the regional economic base”.

These itineraries aim to publicize the best that is being done in terms of innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability and valorization of endogenous resources.

In this sense, the CCDR highlights the Alvostral project, “a reference company in the Portuguese aquaculture market and which has greatly contributed to the dynamization of the Alvor region as an area of choice for oyster production in the Algarve”, we read in the document.

Alvostral was founded in 2012 and is based in the Ria de Alvor nature reserve, in the municipality of Lagos. Its activity involves aquaculture, production, processing, packaging and marketing of bivalves, namely oysters. To develop its activity, it currently has licenses for twelve concessions, located in Vale da Lama, in a total combined area of 10 hectares.

Supported by the Mar2020 Operational Program, Sustainable Aquaculture Development measure (P02M01), the company worked to increase its competitiveness and viability by improving the quality of products with the application of appropriate management techniques and the introduction of new technologies, and reducing structural costs per unit produced, with systems that contributed to improving energy efficiency.

The operation was approved for an eligible investment of €353,499.22, supported by Mar2020 at 50% and with an execution rate of 87%.
