A young man, aged 21, begins to be tried today in the Court of Beja, accused of the material authorship and in the attempted form, of a crime of qualified homicide, committed against a man who “considered to be a member of a police body ”.
The crime occurred in the early hours of July 2 last year, around 00.50 hours, behind the Administrative and Fiscal Court (TAF) of Beja, “in the middle of a public road, in a context of gratuitous violence”, as revealed at the time the PJ, who would arrest the individual two days after the attack.
According to the indictment, the defendant, resident in Beja, got into an argument with the victim, a 27-year-old man, who he attacked with a sharp weapon, striking him in the abdomen. The injuries caused “required an urgent surgical intervention, which if it had not been timely, the injuries inflicted by the defendant would have caused the death of the offended party”, explained the PJ.
Heard in the first interrogation by a Criminal Investigation Judge of the Beja Court, the individual was placed in preventive detention, currently being held in the Leiria Prison. The defense appealed the decision to the Court of Appeal of Évora (TRE), defending the change of the coercive measure to house arrest subject to electronic surveillance, but the TRE Judges refused “in view of the extreme gravity of the acts carried out”.
Convicted in another case
On November 11, 2023, when he was already in pre-trial detention, he was tried and sentenced to 18 months in prison for committing a minor drug trafficking crime. When he was approached a year earlier by agents from the Beja PSP, the defendant had in his possession 88.43 grams of cannabis, a pocket knife with a total length of 21 centimeters (cm) and a 9.5 cm blade and a bundle of banknotes. with a total value of 1,320 euros.
