NIn a notice published in Diário da República on Monday and consulted today by the Lusa agency, the municipality recalls that on March 11th it decided to open the classification procedure (with an impact on the protection and appreciation of property).

“This is a property that represents significant cultural, architectural and landscape value for the municipality and whose protection and enhancement are essential for its safeguarding”, the notice reads.

The property, according to the municipality, will be considered “in the process of classification” upon notification of the decision to open the procedure, and will be covered by the legal provisions in force.

The municipality adds in a statement that the public consultation period will last for a period of 30 working days.

The museum, which was born from the art developed by local weavers in the mid-20th century, is considered the cathedral of the so-called “Portalegre point”, a type of tapestry based on manufacturing.

Opened on July 14, 2001, it pays homage to industrialist Guy Fino, who placed Portugal on the list of great international producers of artistic tapestry, and also praises contemporary art.

With areas for permanent and temporary exhibitions, the space is located between the city’s medieval and 18th century walls.

On the ground floor of the museum it is possible to learn about the history and technique of making Portalegre tapestries, while on the first floor tapestry works from the late 1940s to the present are on display.

In this space you can also enjoy works by various authors, such as Almada Negreiros, António Charrua, António Dacosta, Carlos Botelho, Eduardo Nery, Emília Nadal, Graça Morais, Jorge Martins, Júlio Pomar, Lourdes Castro, Manuel Amado, Manuel Cargaleiro, Menez, Nadir Afonso, Vieira da Silva, Bruno Munari, Jean Lurçat and Le Corbusier.

The museum also has an alternative division for exhibitions and an auditorium with capacity for 112 people, as well as a garden and public spaces capable of adapting to various cultural, artistic and recreational activities.

Over two decades, it has also hosted exhibitions considered “emblematic” by the municipality, such as “Tapestry and Drawing”, by Cruzeiro Seixas, “The Girl from Calhau”, by Nini Andrade Silva, “Vieira da Silva and other portraits” , by João Cutileiro, and exhibitions dedicated to Almada Negreiros and Maria Keil.
