As is tradition, the regional government, through the Regional Secretariat for Inclusion and Youth, marked Labor Day with a tribute ceremony next to the monument on Avenida Sá Carneiro.

Speaking to journalists, Ana Sousa disclosed that, in the first quarter of this year, the Regional Authority for Working Conditions detected 113 violations of the Labor Code, of which 69 have already been remedied.

A number referring to a high quarter, given that, throughout 2023, 127 situations were identified, of which 126 were resolved.

In a proactive action by the Regional Authority for Working Conditions or due to complaints received by the entity, 54 companies or works have already been visited this year, covering 442 workers.

Regarding the day that is celebrated today, and evoking the lyrics of the regional anthem, Ana Sousa highlighted “the heroes of work” from Madeira, praising the positive economic moment that the Region is experiencing, understanding that this reality is reflected in benefits for workers.

“The Region is growing and has an economic level as we all know due to people’s work. It is the worker who promotes the Region, who makes our economy grow”, she acknowledged.

But, faced with the low value of the minimum wage, Ana Sousa commented that “the minimum wage is, as the name suggests, a minimum wage”, and, although it is not ideal, “it is a social elevator”, in the sense of being the based on this basis that the government and employers negotiate to “boost the economy and raise wages”. In his view, there are already several economic sectors paying above the minimum wage.

The government official also recalled the importance of the role of social consultation and mediation carried out by the Madeiran executive with social partners, resulting in “very good negotiations for our workers”.

With the government in management, Ana Sousa had no new measures to announce, but reinforced that the current value of the minimum wage, of 850 euros in the Region, is also due to the work carried out by the Madeiran executive with social partners.

On the other hand, of the support measures for Madeirans with financial difficulties, the government official recalled the importance of PROAGES – Social Stability Guarantee Support Program, which, last year, had an allocation of 2.5 million euros and supported around ten thousand people from three thousand families, in paying expenses such as water, electricity, gas or telecommunications.

He also said that applications for this year’s edition of the program began last week, after publication in JORAM.
