Police detained a couple and two helpers who beat and negotiated with the 54-year-old man daily.
The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested four suspects of being enslave one man over the last few 17 years.
The case happened in Bragança. The 54-year-old victim has no close family and has a cognitive delay.
It was “rented” for 50 euros per dayto carry out various works in the agriculture, reports Jornal de Notícias.
A PJ detained a couple and two more helperswhich will have beaten the man in an escape attempt – who was in a camp, without documents, sleeping in the junk of a van.
This process began 17 years ago, when the defendants approached the man, who was in a difficult situation at the time, and encouraged him to drink alcohol until it stays dependent of your consumption and easily controllable.
Over these years, and according to the PJ, the victim “suffered, at the hands of the defendants, physical and psychological abusehe was exploited as a workforce, having even been ‘leased’ to third parties for the provision of agricultural work, with the defendants receiving financial compensation for the services provided by the victim”.
The man was always being controlled, watched; either by the couple, or by their helpers. Never got medical help – not even when he had a serious accident in 2021.

The defendants are also accused of another scheme: one of his cars was registered in the name of the victim; this way they did not pay tolls or fines.
The man got it to escape two months ago. He is in a support center where he receives psychological treatment and undergoes a rehabilitation process.
