A National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) installed new average speed radars in our country, which began operating in the last months of last year. However, while these radars are relatively recent here, they have existed in France since 2012, but have allegedly all been removed.

The reason? They are not profitable. On the one hand, average speed cameras are expensive devices to purchase and also to maintain – license plate recording cameras are required both at the beginning and at the end of the radar measurement.

On the other hand, according to some French media, these radars generate a very low number of complaints. They result in an average of 5,000 infractions per year, while other types of radars can reach 14,000 infractions per year.

In Portugal, the supply and installation contracts for new speed control radars cost around 5.6 million euros, according to ASNR.

Remember that these radars allow “the monitoring of the speed practiced by drivers by measuring the average speed of the vehicle between two predefined points on the road”.
