Viela do Canto was the main topic of discussion at the last parish assembly – held on Monday, April 29th – with the Caldelas Parish Council proposing the reversal of the agreement signed in 1997, in which the public road was ceded to the private domain.

In Luís Soares’ opinion, “since the community’s connection to the river was resumed, that street has never made sense like today”, arguing the mayor that legally there may be conditions for eversion. Even so, a process that can take years and have costly costs for the Board, implying reimbursement from the private party that owns this ticket.

With several interventions, either from deputies of the two party forces represented in the parish assembly, or from the public before the agenda, and even from the president of the assembly – Joaquim Oliveira – the PSD understood that it was not yet in a position to hold the vote.

“I’m not sure it’s the best solution. It seems to me that the Junta’s proposal is a bit radical. We must think about this issue, its consequences”, maintained Manuel Ribeiro, with the various participants understanding that the most sensible thing would be to suspend the vote on this point.

Bills approved by the socialist majority

In addition to this point, regarding Viela do Canto, several other issues were discussed at the meeting that took place in the multipurpose room of the Old Market, such as the Parish Council’s accounts for last year. The budget, which continues to have the weekly market as its main revenue, was approved by the socialist majority, with an unfavorable vote from the opposition.

Furthermore, other topics were on the table, such as the village’s pedestrian crossings, parking lots and the cemetery’s new regulations regarding the transfer of graves, among others.
