The objective is to “guarantee the safety of practitioners, as well as bathers during the bathing season”:

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) has put into force new regulations on surfing activities in Funchal, on Madeira Island. This decision follows months of debate between the Port Authority of Funcha, the Tourist Entertainment Agents and the associations on the island dedicated to surfing. This regulation came into force last Wednesday, May 1st. Its objective is to “guarantee the safety of practitioners, as well as bathers during the bathing season”.

On AMN’s Linkedin, the following was published:

“The Port Authority of Funchal has, over the last few months, been discussing the practice of surfing activity with all Tourist Entertainment Agents (AAT) and associations dedicated to the practice of the activity on the island of Madeira, having been possible to regulate it.

During the meetings, there was an opportunity for everyone to express their concerns, convey experiences and make known their vision for the future of the activity, and in a consensual way, rules were defined for the practice of the sport, new corridors for access to the sea , establishing limits on the number of users per beach in the teaching modality, as well as distributing spaces for use per school for the period of greatest affluence, between the months of May and October.

With the aim of guaranteeing the safety of practitioners, as well as bathers during the bathing season, the practice of surfing activity was regulated, with the changes transposed into a Notice, to be published by the Captaincy of Porto do Porto. Funchalwhich will come into force on May 1st.”
