The Teatro Sá de Miranda, in Viana do Castelo, hosts the “White Fleet Suite” concert, on May 19th.

The White Fleet Suite was conceived and composed by artist Pamela Morgan, with music and poetry both new and belonging to Portuguese and Canadian cultures.

“The Portuguese have been fishing off Newfoundland for centuries. The White Fleet visited the port of St. John’s to supply itself or to take shelter from storms. They were always welcome, they brought their music, the sounds of their language, wine, their football games, and friendship. Relationships were forged; lasting friendships and romances. We shared a common bond, fishing for cod by line in some of the most dangerous waters in the world at the mercy of the elements. And we opened our homes and our hearts to these sailors brought by winds from far away”, can be read in the description of the concert.

The White Fleet Suite is “a tribute to these wooden ships and iron men. It is a musical presentation that celebrates our cultures and our shared history with original and traditional compositions, as well as poetry from Portugal and Newfoundland, including a visual montage of films and photographs in archives and public and private collections”.

The concert with the participation of Portuguese musicians, such as Teófilo Pimentel Cerqueira and Zezé Fernandes.
