Nthe presentation of the PCP’s Commitment for the elections to the European Parliament, scheduled in Portugal for June 9, João Oliveira demanded, “instead of a stability pact that destroys rights (…), the implementation of a social progress pact and employment, aimed at increasing wages, combating precariousness, reducing working hours without losing wages, defending collective bargaining, the objective of full employment”.
“We need to have in the European Parliament someone who defends social rights such as universal rights in health, education, social security, housing, energy, transport, communications, among others. We need someone who defends public services as an indispensable instrument so that these rights are accessible to everyone, with more equality and not as a business”, continued the coalition candidate.
Speaking to a room with around 150 supporters, the communist leader promised that CDU MEPs will fight “so that each State is able to control its respective national central bank, with supervisory functions not delegable to the European Central Bank”.
“Our commitment is to a sovereign country, to cooperation between sovereign states equal in rights, which is why we defend the institution of the principle of equality between states, one country, one vote in the European Council, with the right of veto on all issues considered fundamental”, continued João Oliveira.
Continuing with its demands, the CDU also wants to fight for “increasing Portugal’s number of mandates in the European Parliament, guaranteeing, at least, the recovery of the four mandates lost in previous enlargements”.
The CDU, he said, is against the “principle of European Union law over that of Portugal and the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic”, they say they will not give up “the use of Portuguese as an official and working language in all EU institutions, at the same time when it is essential to promote cultural diversity and cultural exchange between people and the rejection of the commodification of culture”.
“We do not accept the EU/fortress policy and its security and repressive nature”, concluded the candidate.
