The Teatro Viriato, in Viseu, will present a European and national premiere this May, as well as music and theater shows and cinema seminars.

Next Friday and Saturday (10th and 11th), Amarelo Silvestre and Dançado com a Diferença will premiere the show “Corpo Título”. With artistic direction by Rafaela Santos, the show reflects on the body, its rights and its appropriation and materialization.

Also on the 11th, Ana Bento and Bruno Pinto will once again bring the “Tatabitato” music workshop for children and families. The artists relate music to Teatro Viriato’s programming and invite participants to establish bridges of communication, expression and interaction, in order to stimulate personal development.

Also in the field of programming for families, Cláudia Gaiolas returns to Viseu on the 17th and 18th for another show from the Antiprincesas cycle, introducing Antónia Rodrigues. In addition to the session for families, the show will also be presented to primary schools.

On the 23rd, 24th and 25th of May, Teatro Viriato hosts the European premiere of “Bu!”, a performance by Brazilian artist Vanessa Martins, who materializes, in an ironic way and in a doll with artificial intelligence, the desires of patriarchy and capitalist world. The show also wants to establish a direct and open dialogue about sexual abuse, hypersexualization, pleasure and objectification of the female body.

Also on May 25th, Teatro Viriato promotes another session of the Casa Aberta/Open House workshop, with the company Oliveira & Bachtler, aimed at those who want to learn or deepen their knowledge of the performing arts.

Almost at the end of the month, the company Mala Voadora presents the play “Old Cock”, on the 28th and 29th of May. Written by American writer Robert Schenkkan (winner of a Pulitzer Prize and two Tony Awards), this is a show centered on the figure of the Rooster of Barcelos, Portugal’s most popular souvenir and which comes to life in this play.

Haughty, the rooster says that he saved a pilgrim wrongly accused of a crime from the gallows, but he is not satisfied, he demands explanations and the person who appears to clarify this is António de Oliveira Salazar (in deepfake). The rooster learns that he is part of the manipulative nationalist fiction that Salazar invented, he regains his vocation as a vigilante and will want to take revenge on Salazar.

The month ends with the seminar “Avant-Garde Cinema / In the North American years 1930 to 1970”, which takes place on May 31st and June 1st, with film historian Richard Peña. The event is organized by Teatro Viriato in partnership with Cine Clube de Viseu. Richard Peña was director of programming at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the New York Film Festival between 1988 and 2012.
