Ramirez & Cª (Filhos) marked World Tuna Day with the launch of a new can of Algarvian Roasted Tuna, also in honor of Manuel Guerreiro Ramirez, leader of the fourth generation, who passed away in 2022.

«Manuel Guerreiro Ramirez particularly appreciated this preserve, which he himself launched on the market in 1963, recreating a recipe from his grandmother Emília. Grandfather Manuel, at his request, had carried out the first experiments in a can, on a reduced scale and only for his grandson to share with his friends”, explains Ramirez.

Produced in the usual oven, over 100 years old, and canned by hand, Algarvian Roasted Tuna now has a new image, which perpetuates this passion of Manuel Guerreiro Ramirez, well expressed in the watercolor, by sculptor Filipe Mariares, which illustrates the new can.

In the image, Manuel Guerreiro Ramirez, at the end of the 1940s, known then as the boy Balito, watches, with his father, Emílio Ramirez, the arrival of a huge right-wing tuna (the name given to tuna caught off the coast of Algarve coast, by tuna traps, on their migration to spawn in the Mediterranean).

Ramirez & Cª (Filhos), the oldest fish canning industry in the world in operation, is, at the same time, the most modern and ecological unit in the sector.

Ramirez, Cocagne, The Queen of the Coast, Tomé, Al Fares or LaRose These are some of the centuries-old brands that Ramirez & Cª (Filhos) produces at «Ramirez 1853», an industrial unit considered, by international auditors, to be one of the five best in the global agri-food sector.

Ramirez, which is celebrating 170 years of activity, produces more than 200 references. From tuna to sardines, including mackerel; cod, squid, horse mackerel, potas, mussels, anchovy fillets or pâtés. With 220 employees, it produces 60 million cans/year and earns 40 million euros per year.
