“Agriculture has always been an absolutely strategic sector, agriculture for the CDS has never been a niche, it has never been fashionable. And as a strategic sector, today the CDS, through its local bodies, through its national bodies — I am here as president of the CDS — could not fail to give this political signal in favor of agriculture”, he said last Thursday Nuno Melo, speaking to journalists during a visit to Ovibeja.

The president of the Social Democratic Center (CDS-PP), also Minister of National Defense, added that “fortunately, the Government today has a Minister of Agriculture who — I have no doubt — will be a minister to the credit of farmers. Someone who in the European Parliament dealt closely with everything to do with community funds. Much of agriculture in Portugal has to do with the good execution of community funds; precisely what we haven’t had in the last eight.”

According to Nuno Melo, this “will be a Government that will make the most of community funds, by simplifying processes, reducing bureaucracy that only harms farmers, attacking strategic dossiers such as, for example, what has to do with water”.

“I believe that this minister and the Government will, through Agriculture, show how the Democratic Alliance is good news for all those dedicated to the agri-food sector in Portugal”, said Nuno Melo, highlighting that “at this moment the Farmers have good reason to believe that they will have someone in the Government who is a partner and not an opponent”.

In other words, farmers will have in the Executive “who will take care of the good application of funds, which are scarce, but which need to be applied quickly every day, who will certainly have much more simplified procedures, putting an end to dimensions of bureaucracy that only cause that farmers cannot have decisions made on time”.
