The Regional Tourism Entity of Alentejo and Ribatejo (ERT Alentejo and Ribatejo) wants the Alentejo region to be a reference for remote foreign workers.

Following this strategy, ERT Alentejo and Ribatejo will present a program to attract digital nomads in May, according to Dinheiro Vivo. The objective is, by attracting these workers, to help develop the local economy and municipalities with fewer populations.

José Santos, President of ERT Alentejo e Ribatejo, considers that this strategy takes advantage of the fact that Lisbon’s popularity has fallen in the main international rankings of digital nomads. Through these projects, ERT Alentejo e Ribatejo wants to show that there is a competitive offer in this region , with unique advantages.

The creation of five hubs in each sub-region – Alto Alentejo, Alentejo Central, Baixo Alentejo, Alentejo Litoral and Ribatejo. is attracting the attention of Municipalities that are currently evaluating the capacity to respond to the reception of these workers, fulfilling the defined objectives, namely having infrastructures that can be adapted to coworking spaces, good network, internet speed and accommodation.

The president of ERT Alentejo e Ribatejo also recalls in this interview that the average occupancy in Alentejo is 60%, but that “there are many times of the year when rooms need to be filled” and, for this reason, “digital nomads can be useful in that regard”.

The Entity is working together with sector associations in the development of this project.
