ANDStudents for End Fossil blocked the Banco de Portugal building on Monday morning.
They glued themselves to the doors, preventing entry into the building, in a protest, they say in a statement, “to denounce the Portuguese Government’s investment in the fossil industry, and the lack of investment in the fair energy transition”.
Two students still blocked themselves inside the building’s revolving doors.
The Public Security Police (PSP) are already on site.
This student movement, which has been carrying out several initiatives of this kind, demands the end of the use of fossil fuels by 2030, and that we stop using fossil gas to produce electricity by next year, instead using 100% renewable electricity and free.
“When we are told that in Portugal there is no money for the investment necessary for the energy transition, we remember that Portugal is the country in the European Union that has the highest percentage of its GDP allocated to fossil fuel subsidies”says Catarina Bio, student and spokesperson for this action.
The students also announced, in a statement, that this was the first protest in a wave of actions, which they call ‘Student Spring for the End of the Fossil’, where they will continue to interrupt the functioning of institutions of power that say they are “failing”, until they commit to ensuring the end of the Fossil by 2030.
