Citadão is back in Viseu. As tradition dictates, the Aula Magna of the Polytechnic of Viseu will host the 18th International Competition of Academic Tunas of Dão, on the first weekend of May. The organization is, once again, in charge of Tunadão 1998

The festival starts on May 3rd and the first night is dedicated to celebrating the 25th anniversary of Tunadão1998, the tuna of the Instituto Politécnico de Viseu (IPV). The night will be entirely dedicated to their music and their show and, for Luís Almeida, tuno and member of the tuna direction, this celebration allows them to “celebrate with whoever comes to see, what is important to us”.

On Saturday, May 4th, the festival welcomes four tunas, Estudantina de Castelo Branco, Afonsina from the University of Minho, Desertuna from the University of Beira Interior and TAIPCA from the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave.

Luís Almeida reveals some of this year’s news: “we have a funny peculiarity, we have some winners from previous citations”. TUNADÃO 1998 will perform in double doses, on Friday and Saturday and, in addition, instead of two, Alcatuna de Alcafache will be the only extra tuna. On Sunday, the prizes will be presented.

The member of the board of the organizing Tuna states that the selection is usually random, but that normally the chosen tunas are former participants, are close to TUNADÃO 1998, or are new to the festival.

Expectations are high, especially because the International event is always a success and has reached maximum capacity. The audience is usually a mix of different age groups, united by their love for music: “we are playing at home, the audience really supports us”.

For the city of Viseu, the international event brings prominence and recognition. “People come from different parts of the country and people come on purpose to watch the tunas they like and with that we managed to bring some dynamism to the city of Viseu, during this weekend”, says Luís Almeida.

Those who come from abroad always leave very positive feedback. Tuto Luís Almeida gives the example of the Lisbon University Student: “I remember them coming to us, thanking us and saying it was the best festival they had ever been to”.

The person in charge believes that one of the main reasons why the tunas like to participate is the conviviality, the good reception and the fact that CITADÃO offers transport, accommodation and food to all participants.
