This year, on May 30th, National Travel Agent Day will be celebrated for the first time in Portugal, a recognition “for the remarkable work” in favor of Portuguese tourism, the Portuguese Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (APAVT) announced today. .

The objective is to “promote the profession, value the travel agency sector and raise public awareness about the importance of these professionals for tourism in Portugal”, highlights APAVT in a statement.

To mark the initiative, the Association will organize a “big festival” on May 28th and launch a microsite for National Travel Agent Day, with information about “the advantages of using these professionals, in addition to a wide range of special offers from APAVT members”.

May 30th coincides with the founding date of APAVT, in 1950.

“By helping the Portuguese travel and welcoming tourists from all over the world, these professionals contribute to economic growth and promote, in Portugal, a spirit of openness and plurality that we are so proud of”, highlighted the president of APAVT, Pedro Costa Ferreira, cited in the statement.

The director highlighted that travel agents have been “unsung heroes, putting their knowledge at the disposal of humanitarian causes and national interest”, as happened during the covid-19 pandemic, when “they helped to repatriate Portuguese tourists, even though they were not their customers, to ensure that they arrived safely in Portugal”.

For Pedro Costa Ferreira, National Travel Agent Day “is a tribute and fair recognition, within the sector, for the remarkable work that these professionals have developed in favor of Portuguese tourism”, added the president of APAVT.

The statement recalls that the first travel agency was created in 1840 and, since then, “these professionals have established themselves throughout the national territory, acting as a bridge between Portuguese citizens and tourist exploration around the world”.

“Due to their highly specialized knowledge, travel agents provide important advice and ensure greater security in the travel experience, enabling immersion in new cultures, traditions and ways of life, and contributing to greater intercultural dialogue”, concludes the note of press.
