Another dismissal: Government fires PSP national director

This Monday, the Government dismissed the national director of the Public Security Police (PSP), chief superintendent José Barros Correia, SIC confirmed. The successor, already appointed by the Minister of Internal Administration, is Luís Carrilho.

In an internal note addressed to PSP officers, chiefs and agents, José Barros Correia revealed that the decision, “the exclusive initiative” of the minister, was communicated to him at 6:45 pm.

“Today, at 6:45 pm, the Minister of Internal Administration, Judge Counselor Margarida Blasco, announced my dismissal, this decision being her sole initiative,” he wrote.

Superintendent José Barros Correia has been in office since September last year and is the third official to be removed from a public position by the Government of Luís Montenegro, after Ana Jorge (Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa) and Fernando Araújo (SNS).

Luís Miguel Ribeiro Carrilho was appointed this Monday as the new national director of the PSP, the Ministry of Internal Administration said in a statement. The decision to appoint “comes within the scope of the operational restructuring of the Public Security Police, both at national level and in terms of institutional and international representation of this public security force”, explained the minister.

Who is Luís Carrilho?

Luís Carrilho, Superintendent of the Public Security Police is the Commander of the Special Police Unit of the Public Security Police, since October 26, 2023. Previously, Luís Carrilho was the Head of the Security Service of the Presidency of the Republic (Security Officer of the President of the Republic), since October 1, 2022.

Previously, Superintendent Luís Carrilho was graduated to Chief Superintendent, by Order of the Minister of Internal Administration, Constança Urbano de Sousa, in 2017 and appointed United Nations Police Advisor (UNPOL) and Director of the Police Division in the Department of Peace Operations of the UN in 2017, having coordinated the “UNCOPS – United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit” meetings in 2018 and 2022.
