There are more and more people living in the same house

The proportion of overcrowded family accommodation was 12.7% in 2021, out of a total of 527,855, which represents an increase of 17.1% compared to 2011, according to a study released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

“Taking into account intercensal developments, it appears that overcrowding decreased between 1991 and 2011 [-19,6% entre 1991 e 2001 e -20,8% entre 2001 e 2011]and in the period from 2011 to 2021 there was a relative variation of +17.1%”, points out the study “The Housing Park: Analysis and Evolution 2011-2021”, carried out in collaboration with the National Civil Engineering Laboratory ( LNEC) based on the results of the 2021 Census.

According to the work, in 2021, “the quantitative housing shortages existing in Portugal were 136,800 dwellings, corresponding to 3.3% of the total number of family dwellings occupied as habitual residence”.

Of the total needs, a total of 75,494 stood out to cover situations of overcrowded accommodation occupied by a household with a family nucleus cohabiting with other people (55.2%) and a total of 55,098 to cover situations of overcrowded accommodation for households with two or more families (40.3%).

With “less expression”, INE refers to the need for 4,042 accommodation units to cover the situations of private households in non-classic accommodation of habitual residence (3.0%) and the need for 2,166 accommodation units to cover the situations of households with habitual residence in collective accommodation.

On the other hand, in 2021 there were 154,075 vacant dwellings in Portugal for sale or rent without the need for repairs or in need of light repairs, deducted from the margin to function the market.

“In view of the quantitative housing shortages, there was a margin of 17,275 accommodation units immediately available for use”, notes the statistical institute.
