A Parliamentary leader of the Socialist Party (PS), Alexandra Leitão, accused, this Wednesday, the Government of putting “Portugal’s prestige into question”. The socialist was referring to the statements made by the Minister of Finance, Miranda Sarmento, who “is changing in terms of the size of what he says is a deficit, a problem in public accounts”. “It doesn’t substantiate, it doesn’t explain and much of what he says has already been dismantled”, she defended.
“This calls into question the prestige of Portugal. Something that was achieved by Portugal and the Portuguese in terms of the international credibility of Portuguese public accounts. This is very serious, it discredits the country”said Alexandra Leitão in statements to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic (AR).
For the deputy, Miranda Sarmento should explain what “expenses he would no longer make”. “Would I stop buying vaccines? Would I stop supporting Ukraine? Would I stop supporting farmers?”, gave Alexandra Leitão as an example.
“You can’t play with the country’s prestige”, highlighted Alexandra Leitão.
The parliamentary leader also said that the PS will file a request to hear the “Minister of Finance”. “We are using, naturally, the parliamentary instruments that we have at our disposal so that, naturally, in its own right the Government can clarify what are the facts on which it is based to take a set of decisions, whether in terms of dismissals or in terms of public accounts that, in our opinion, have no basis”, said Alexandra Leitão.
Regarding the exonerations made by the Government, Leitão said that “baseless statements are presented, without facts to corroborate them”. “The Prime Minister comes to say that when a new Government enters it has the right to change people to translate its own policies, I don’t know what we are left with”, he highlighted.
Alexandra Leitão also left the doubt as to whether the dismissals were made “to have new political guidelines”, or because “there are serious things here”, as other members of the Government have said.
