The University of Aveiro (UA) is developing, in partnership with GNR, a new fire protection suit that, in addition to offering an additional layer of thermal protection – essential to mitigate the risks of burns –, actively promotes air circulation, reducing perspiration and expelling hot air.

To this end, the AU formalized, on the 15th of
March 2024, a cooperation protocol with the Republican National Guard (GNR).
The fireproof suit was developed at UA by Filipe Bento (researcher) and Francisco Providência (designer and teacher), members of the Department of Communication and Art (DeCA). This new personal protective equipment (PPE) presents a multi-faceted approach to ensuring the safety and comfort of users.

In addition to offering an additional layer of thermal protection, essential to mitigate the risks of
burns, this fact actively promotes air circulation, reducing sweating
and expelling hot air. These innovative features allow you to lower your body temperature and avoid problems with thermal stress, premature exhaustion and reduced mobility.

The UA guaranteed industrial property rights by protecting these technological developments through a patent and design application.

The protection of technology at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) by design and patent application allows you to protect your innovative design, as well as the invention that promotes the effective circulation of hot air between the equipment and the human body.

With strategically positioned outlets, the system dissipates heat to the outside, promoting greater comfort and efficiency.

The protocol signed with the GNR will allow the testing and validation on the ground of prototypes of the fire-retardant suit, in the context of training and simulation exercises, by forestry sappers from the Protection and Relief Emergency Unit.

The validation of this technology with GNR elements will allow its technological maturation and encourage implementation in the PPE sector, through cooperation with entities
public or private.

UACOOPERA, the structure responsible for the UA’s interface with the outside world, which aims to support academia in the various cooperation activities with Society and value knowledge and results from R&D activities, remains available to discuss this technology with potential interested parties.
