The three PS deputies elected in Alentejo, Nelson Brito (Beja), Luís Dias (Évora) and Ricardo Pinheiro (Portalegre), will present a proposal in Parliament aiming to exempt tolls for residents on the A2 and A6 motorways.

The demand comes after Parliament approved, on May 2nd, in general, the PS bill to eliminate tolls in the ex-SCUT and after the three elected representatives from Alentejo met in the Assembly of the Republic, on Tuesday, 7, with the presidents of the region’s municipal councils elected by the PS.

The request for exemption from tolls on the A2 and A6 for residents “is the agreement that exists within the PS parliamentary group, won by the Alentejo deputies”, Nelson Brito reveals to “CA”.

According to the socialist deputy elected by Beja, “the main criterion behind this legislative proposal is interiority”.

“Now Alentejo meets this interiority criterion and, therefore, it makes no sense for Baixo Alentejo, Central Alentejo and Alto Alentejo not to be incorporated into this exemption proposal made by the PS”, adds Nelson Brito.

The meeting between deputies and socialist mayors also raised concerns about the Government’s announced intention to move forward with changes to the Surcharge and the Municipal Tax on Onerous Property Transfers (IMT), taxes that “in some cases” are “essential for sustainability financial situation of many municipalities”.

“Municipalities cannot mortgage revenues of this magnitude, such as IMT and Derrama, and this should be a cause for concern and the guardianship must provide information”, argues Nelson Brito.
