The requalification works on two roads and a municipal path in the municipality of Aljustrel have already started, with a total investment of 608,440 euros, announced the city council.

According to a statement from the municipality, the ongoing projects aim to provide municipal roads 526 and 527 (EM526 and EM527), as well as municipal road 1054 (CM1054), “with better mobility conditions, avoiding degradation and, at the same time, investing in security.”

“What motivated the works was the terrible state these roads are in, with some sections that were practically unfit for circulation”, the mayor of Aljustrel, Carlos Teles, explained to the Lusa agency today.

The three roads are located in the parishes of São João de Negrilhos, Ervidel and União de Freguesias de Aljustrel and Rio de Moinhos, bordering the municipalities of Ferreira do Alentejo (Beja) and Santiago do Cacém (Setúbal).

The mayor added that the interventions were necessary “due to the large traffic” that these roads experience, “due to the great business dynamics of the municipality at an agricultural level”.

In the statement, the municipality explained that the project “will make it possible to reinforce the existing pavement, improving its performance and guaranteeing its durability”.

The improvement and conservation works “will focus on the correction and functional rehabilitation of the road platform pavement and the improvement of the respective existing drainage and road signage systems”, it can be read.

It is also planned to “correct existing depressions downstream and upstream of the existing hydraulic passages in EM527”, added the municipality.

The rehabilitation works on these three roads are financed using the Aljustrel City Council’s own funds, which led its president, Carlos Teles, to regret the lack of community funding for this type of undertaking. If it existed, “it would be very useful”, he said.

Even so, the mayor guaranteed that the Alentejo municipality intends to continue intervening on its municipal roads and paths.

“That is our intention, outside and even inside the localities, because the roads are actually getting very damaged and we have to make an effort to recover them”, he concluded.
