In the middle of Invasive Species Week (SEI 2024), the Municipality of Esposende is launching a campaign to alert the community to the importance of combating these species, throughout the year.
Considering that there are more than 300 invasive species in Portugal, including plants and animals, it is essential that everyone contributes to combating these undesirable species, which can be researched at: https://invasoras.pt/.
«Thus, the appeal to the population is that, if they detect invasive plants on their properties, such as pampas grass, Australian grass, mimosas or others, to eliminate them, preventing them from expanding further», says the municipality, in a statement.
The municipality of Esposende highlights, in this regard, the work it is carrying out to combat the invasive species velutina wasp, either through the placement of traps or through the destruction of all detected nests.
«Throughout the year, it has been eliminating isolated outbreaks of invasive woody plants and, recently, it launched the fight against a new species, Baccharis halimifolia», he adds.
