The arrival of the supercomputer brought visibility to Guimarães in terms of investment in the science and digital sector. New FCT data center will be built on the Azurém campus with help from the PRR.

At a meeting of UMinho’s general council, rector Rui Vieira de Castro announced the construction of new equipment in Guimarães to house a data center for the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The factor of Deucalion, the supercomputer in full operation since May 1st, was fundamental in this decision.

The project is already underway with the location and opening date already advanced, that is, in 2026 Guimarães could have a National Center for Advanced Computing. This equipment can help FCT with cybersecurity issues and also with the evolution of teaching in this area.

In an investment of around 3 and 4 million euros, the University of Minho will be able to occupy an improvised parking lot next to the Computer Graphics Center (CCG) and TecMinho, at the back of the Azurém campus.
