The heat of these days will give way to an episode of strong thunderstorms next weekend. Some regions of mainland Portugal will be affected. Here are the most affected areas and the risks associated with cold gout.
This Thursday, May 9th, It dawned with a very cloudy sky. From the beginning of the afternoon the cloud cover decreased and the sky has become somewhat cloudy or clear. O wind It blows weakly to moderately East quadrant reinforcing the stability and warmth of the anticyclonic subtropical ridge, loaded with hot air.
Today maximum temperatures rose in much of the geography of mainland Portugalwith this increase being more noticeable in the Central Region, in contrast to a slight decrease – also in the highs – on the West Coast south of Cabo Carvoeiro.
In May, a very unusual situation is expected in these areas of Portugal, according to Meteored maps
In Madeira, stable weather conditions prevail, with the sky being slightly cloudy or clear. In the Azores today, the weather is more stable compared to the last few days – very marked by the succession of fronts that affected the archipelago with precipitation and thunderstorms – highlighting the partially clouded sky and the occurrence of light drizzle scattered across the various islands.
Cold drop arrives in mainland Portugal tomorrow
From the Early afternoon tomorrow, May 10th, showers are expected to occurpotentially accompanied by thunderstorms It is occasionally under the form of hail. They could be locally strongespecially in mountainous areasbeing most likely in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro and Vila Real. In districts like those of Coimbra, Viseu and Bragança The possibility of irregular and very dispersed precipitation.
Here in Meteored we had warned about the erratic trajectory and chaotic nature of cold drops. In this sense, everything indicates that the influence of a small isolated depression at altitude (commonly known as cold drop) in the state of the weather in the geography of the Continent will anticipate what was initially predicted and bring periods of instability tomorrow, Friday (10), in the North and Center Regions.
The wind will blow weak to moderate from variable directions, being predominant from the Northwest in the southern regions of the Montejunto-Estrela mountain system. Furthermore, it is expected slight increase in temperatures in the North and Central interior as opposed to a drop on the coast north of Cabo Raso.
Weekend with strong thunderstorms in these areas
This Saturday (11) dawn with a slightly cloudy or clear sky, but cloud cover will soon be abundantabove all from the afternoon. There will be a probability of heavy showers, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms and occasionally in the form of hail in vast areas of the Northern Region (roughly areas of Cávado, Ave, Alto Tâmega, Douro and Terras de Trás-os-Montes) which correspond to the districts of Braga, Vila Real and Bragança.
This irregular and intermittent precipitation, sometimes locally intense – typical of convective rain – it will be more likely in mountain areas, and may spread to other areas of the North and Center Regions. Thus, in places in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Porto, Aveiro, Viseu and Guardaalthough less frequent and likely, isolated or scattered precipitation is also expected.
In the rest of mainland Portugal the sky will generally remain clear or slightly cloudy, although the possibility of one or two showers cannot be ruled out. A predicted slight decrease in maximum temperatures, especially on the North and Central Coast. The wind from the North quadrant (generally Northwest) will prevail, blowing weak to moderate.
On Sunday – May 12th – the sky will generally be slightly cloudy at dawn and the influence of the cold drop will practically cease to be noticed in our geography. However, it is expected increased cloudiness during the afternoon in the North and Center Regions, particularly in inland areas. In these regions, one can see the possibility of light and scattered showers.
Still on this day the wind will prevail from the North quadrant (generally Northwest), blowing weak to moderate. Furthermore, it is expected drop in temperatures, more pronounced on the North and Central Coast.
Next week could start with more periods of rain and instability
For the beginning of next week, more periods of rain and instability are expected in mainland Portugal. In fact, models suggest that secondary low pressure associated with a cold depression around the British Isles will bring a lot of cloudiness and some precipitation in vast areas of the North and Center Regions.
Weather in Portugal this week: the polar jet will put the country at the mercy of sudden changes in weather conditions
Furthermore, there will also be a sharp drop in temperatures it is a predominance of northwest winds which will tend to increase in intensity.
