The Portuguese Nurses Union suspended the strike days scheduled for professionals working at Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, with the negotiation process of reviewing the collective work agreement “on standby”.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, the leader of the Portuguese Nurses Union (SEP) Guadalupe Simões said that the strike scheduled for May 22nd and 23rd had been suspended, similar to what had already happened with the one on May 8th.

“As long as there is no new provider and as long as there is no table, we have no interlocutor and, therefore, there can be no negotiations”, he explained.

Ombudsman Ana Jorge is currently in day-to-day management roles, having been dismissed by the Minister of Labor, Maria do Rosário Ramalho, on April 30.

According to the SEP, the review of the collective bargaining agreement is in “waiting mode”, after, in 2024, the table assumed “that the negotiation process would take place and that finally the nurses (…) would have salary increases that they haven’t had since 2022.”

According to Guadalupe Simões, there will be around a thousand professionals, spread across the various areas of Santa Casa, such as nursing homes or the Alcoitão Hospital.

He added that the issue is the increase in the salary scale, the review of painful hours and specific subjects for specialist nurses, which, overall, relate to the enhancement of their career and functions.
