President Ánxela Fernández Callís and President Rui Lages joined together in a meeting where they committed to working on the creation of a Eurocity to strengthen ties, carry out joint projects and solve common problems.

Rosal and Caminha held a historic meeting that marks the beginning of a great cross-border alliance in the Minho region. The Mayor of O Rosal, Ánxela Fernández Callís, held a meeting with the Mayor of Caminha, Rui Lages, where both mayors agreed to take the first steps towards the creation of a Eurocity that includes Caminha, O Rosal and The Guard, which allows us to continue to strengthen ties between neighboring populations, address problems, common objectives and develop joint socio-cultural and economic programming.

Fernández Callís expressed his satisfaction with the visit of the mayor from Caminha and expressed his desire to work in close collaboration to create a European space that unites the two banks of the Minho “which are not considered borders”. “This is an important step to consolidate our relationship and create growth opportunities for the three municipalities”, stated the President.

For his part, President de Caminha highlighted the importance of addressing common problems, such as mobility in the Minho area, as well as strengthening ties between populations that already feel united. “It is essential that we work together to overcome the obstacles that affect our region and promote greater integration between programming and services, which will undoubtedly benefit our neighbors”, highlighted Rui Lages.

The Councilor for Culture, João Antonio Branco, also participated in the meeting. the councilors of Rosal Germán Rodríguez, Beatriz Rodríguez, Carlos Villanueva and Alejandro González, the Councilor for Culture of Caminha, João Pinto, as well as technicians and specialists, who addressed the first measures to be taken towards the creation of Eurocity.

The creation of this great alliance will be another step in the close union between these municipalities, as technicians from O Rosal and Caminha have been working for years on a joint training program launched by the European Group for Territorial Cooperation of Rio Minho, AECT Rio Minho, for the development of future joint cross-border projects.

The next step will be a meeting on May 20th, in Caminha, with the three mayors: do Rosal, A Guarda and Caminha, precisely to address these first steps towards the creation of Eurocity.
