Benfica wins women’s Portuguese Cup 50 years later

Benfica’s women’s volleyball team won the Portuguese Cup, beating PV2014/Colégio Efanor 3-2.

The Eagles won the first two partials, by 25-22 and 25-18, but Colégio Efanor equalized, with partials of 25-21 and 25-13. In the last set, Benfica ended up winning 15-12.

«We can never be afraid to play and compete. Anyone who is in sport has to understand that there are victories and defeats, that there are no moral victories. Whoever represents Benfica has to do everything possible to win. I’m very happy, because it was the first time this season that we beat Colégio Efanor», said Rui Moreita, Benfica coach.

It is the third time that Benfica has won this trophy, but the last time was exactly 50 years ago.

This weekend’s final was played in Viana do Castelo.

«There was a lot of merit from Benfica. This was Benfica’s best game [com o PV2014/Colégio Efanor nesta época]. We had the ability to react. We dignified this trophy. I am very proud of this group. It was a privilege to be here. On Friday, the championship play-off begins [com o Vitória de Guimarães]. We want to win the semi-final and want to be champions”, warned Mário Martins, coach of PV2014/Colégio Efanor.
