Actor Robert Downey Jr. defended his friend Chris Hemsworth’s work as the hero Thor. The two worked together on four films in the ‘Avengers’ franchise, with the North American star playing Iron Man and his Australian counterpart as Marvel’s Norse god.
Downey Jr. came to Hemsworth’s defense after the Australian star himself regretted his work as Thor, especially in the hero’s most recent solo film, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ (2022). The Australian artist expressed his regrets in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine.
Amid his work promoting his new film, ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ (2024), Hemsworth classified his presence in Marvel films as “replaceable”. He also took responsibility for the failure of the fourth ‘Thor’ to critics.
Producer and protagonist of the 2022 film, Hemsworth basically said that he let himself be carried away by the character’s irreverence and this ended up interfering with the progress and drama of the work. In an interview with the same Vanity Fair, Downey Jr. defended his friend’s work.
Downey Jr. said: “First of all, Thor as a character is very complicated to adapt – there are a lot of implicit limitations – but he and the [diretor do primeiro filme do herói] Ken Branagh discovered how to transcend, to make him somehow identifiable but god-like.”
“[O personagem de] Hemsworth had, in my opinion, the most complex psyche of all of us Avengers,” the actor continued. ‘He has intelligence and seriousness, but also a lot of wisdom, impulsiveness and kindness.”
Downey Jr. concluded by calling his colleague’s work in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (2017), ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018) and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019) “a formidable hat-trick”. Watch the trailers for ‘Avengers’ and ‘Love and Thunder’ below:
