The beginning of everything
Before becoming such a sinister being, Gollum was actually a hobbit from the river people, who lived near the Fields of Lis. His name was Sméagol. He lived with his family and had his grandmother as his matriarch.
On one of his birthdays, he went fishing with his cousin, Déagol. However, while they were trying to catch a fish, Déagol was pulled into the water and emerged with a golden ring. What they did not know was that the artifact in question was the One Ring, belonging to Sauron, the Lord of Darkness, which ended up being lost in the death of Isildur in the battle of the Fields of Lis.
The obsession with the One Ring
The play ended up haunting Sméagol, causing him to kill Déagol to have the ring for himself. He hid his cousin’s body, without revealing to anyone what really happened.
