Neil Tennant from Pet Shop Boys asks: what are Taylor Swift’s “known songs”?

-

Neil Tennant gave an interview to the English newspaper “The Guardian”, where he questioned why, in his opinion, Taylor Swift, one of the biggest pop stars in the world, does not have “famous songs”.

The lead singer of Pet Shop Boys admitted to being a fan of the American artist, saying he was “fascinated by the phenomenon”. “She’s very popular, and I really like that. But when I listen to her albums, I get disillusioned: where are the well-known songs? What’s her ‘Billie Jean’?,” he said, giving the example of one of Michael Jackson’s best-known songs from 1983.

Faced with the suggestion that Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ could be that song everyone knows, Tennant rejected: “No. I know that would be your answer. But I heard it the other day and it’s no ‘Billie Jean’.”

“She has a great voice, and the production is beautiful. But melodically… she only sings two notes higher or lower,” she criticized her. “But it’s fascinating.”

“I like that it brings together a lot of people, many generations, but I think the music is a disappointment. I’m not even talking about the lyrics, I’m talking about the music”, she concluded.

The Pet Shop Boys release a new album today, titled “Nonetheless”.
