Zakk Wylde reveals what Ozzy Osbourne told him at his guitarist audition

In an interview with Ultimate Guitar, Zakk Wylde was asked about what it was like auditioning to join Ozzy Osbourne’s band. He said he first sent a tape of him playing and a photo of him. Then he was invited to play in person with the singer. Check out the demo tape at the end of the article.

“I mean, as far as all the classical stuff, obviously, that was because of St. Rhodes. Obviously, Randy played a lot of classical music, so it’s like, well, the hardest thing you can do is learn classical guitar. So it was like: ‘Ah, I have to learn the classic’.”

About the recording, my friend had a Fostex, and we recorded on that – we set up a microphone and recorded on that, because I didn’t know how to record, so I had my friend record me on that and that was it. We had a cassette tape. I sent it to my friend Dave Feld, who I still talk to, and Mark Weiss, and they ended up taking it to Ozzy

Ozzy always told me, he said this funny story… My sister took a Polaroid photo of me on the porch of my parents’ house [e enviamos isso com a fita]. And Ozzy said he remembered that photo when I was auditioning because when he saw me he said, ‘Have I seen you anywhere before?’

He looked back and said, ‘I remember now because your picture was the only one I looked at from the audition tapes. I was like, ‘Oh, look at this kid, he must really love Randy Rhoads.’ Who do not love? Me and everyone else… But that was it, man. So no, I don’t know how long it took me to make the tape because I probably played it all at once.”
