Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson will be placed under guardianship after dementia diagnosis

The American court ruled on Thursday (10) that Brian Wilson, founder and leader of the band Beach Boys, will be placed under guardianship after receiving a diagnosis of dementia.

Judge Gus T May, of the Superior Court of Los Angeles, in the United States, approved the petition presented by the family and inner circle of Wilson, 81, following the death of his wife Melinda Ledbetter Wilson in January, according to The Guardian .

According to the publication, Wilson consents to the agreement and does not have the capacity to make health care decisions.
The artist’s guardianship was delegated to Jean Sievers and LeeAnn Hard, colleagues who have worked on managing Wilson’s career for years.

The court stipulated that the duo must consult Wilson’s seven children on all decisions related to the artist’s health.
A medical statement filed with a February petition said Wilson has a severe neurocognitive disorder, is taking medication for dementia and is unable to meet his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing or shelter.

According to The Guardian, a report written by Robert Frank Cipriano, a lawyer appointed by the court to represent Wilson’s interests, said that the artist lived well, in Beverly Hilss, with two daughters and a caregiver.

The artist, according to the document, can move around with help and is aware of who he is, where he is and when he is, but he was unable to name his children exactly.

Brian Wilson had already been under conservatorship since 1992. Jerome Billet, a court-appointed guardian after the musician faced problems with nervous breakdowns and hallucinations, was sued by the artist after allegedly mishandling a lawsuit between Wilson and Mike Love, another member of the Beach Boys .

From 1995 onwards, Wilson had his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, as his guardian.
