The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, considers that the Government’s housing plan is not feasible.

The statements by the head of state were made on Monday night, during the commemoration of the anniversary of CM and CMTV.

Marcelo criticized the measures taken by António Costa’s Executive to combat housing problems and even said that the package is “inoperable”.

Asked whether or not he will veto the diplomas of the “More Housing” program, the head of state did not respond and only added that expectations were raised for this plan that will not develop.

The government presented the package More Housing in February, but the process will only be closed at the end of March.

Among the measures already approved and presented are a “income support and a subsidy interest measure for loans contracted” until March 15th.

“All families with incomes up to the 6th step of the IRS (inclusive) and who currently have an effort rate greater than 35% are eligible”.

“O Income support is intended for renters with effort rates above 35%, with income up to the maximum limit of the 6th step of the IRS and with contracts concluded and registered with the Tax Authority until March 15, 2023, will allow families to be immediately supported in an amount that may rise to 200 euros per month, paid by Social Security, with retroactive effects to January 2023 ”, summarizes the statement from the Council of Ministers.

The measures that are generating the most controversy remain in public consultation until the next 24th of March, the day on which the public consultation of the rest of the program ends (which includes measures that will have to be sent by the Government to Parliament), which will go to the Council of Ministers on the 30th of this month, then proceed to the Assembly of Republic.

At stake are diplomas related to local accommodation, gold visas or forced lease of vacant houses, among other topics.
