A fire that broke out in the early afternoon of this Friday in a wooded area in the municipality of Sintra is mobilizing 225 operational personnel, 76 land assets and four air assets.

The fire broke out at 1:17 pm in a wooded area. The fire quickly spread and in the middle of the afternoon it began to threaten houses in the parish of Rio de Mouro, in Sintra. The authorities removed the population from these same dwellings and there were still those who left on foot as there were no means available to evacuate them.

People were also evacuated from Quinta da Estribeira, a horse riding farm where several animals, namely horses, are found, after the wind started to push the flames in that direction.

According to the Morning mail on site, the flames threaten to reach the municipality of Cascais.

The fire is now much more controlled and in the resolution phase and was reported to have been subdued at 18:15. Firefighters are currently in the aftermath and ensuring that there will be no reactivation overnight, although they will likely have to spend the night there to ensure safety.

The evacuees have already returned to their homes, with only the loss to the flames of a storage warehouse.

During the operation, two firefighters had to be assisted at the scene for smoke inhalation and dehydration and another was transported to the hospital due to trauma, revealed Commander Joaquim Leonardo, of the Algueirão Mem-Martins Fire Department.
