American novelist Paul Auster, author of works such as “The New York Trilogy” and “City of Glass”, died on Tuesday at the age of 77, The New York Times reported.

Auster died at home in New York, from lung cancer.

Born into a Jewish family of Austrian descent, in 1947, in Newark (New Jersey), Auster would later make Brooklyn his home and the setting of his novels, especially in the 1980s and 1990s.

He has an extensive literary work published in more than 40 languages.

In Portugal, Paul Auster has published a large part of his work, in particular his novels, such as “Mr. Vertigo”, “Palácio da Lua”, “Música do Acaso”, “Leviathan”, “A Trilogia de Nova York”, “Timbuktu “, “The Book of Illusions”, “The Follies of Brooklyn”, “The Man in the Dark” and “4 3 2 1”, for which he was a finalist for the Booker Prize.

He signed on to direct a couple of films, including “The Inner Life of Martin Frost” (2007), partially shot in Portugal.

He was awarded the 2006 Prince of Asturias Prize for Literature, made a Commander of the French Order of Arts and Letters in 2007 and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
