SPORTING CHAMPION: the lion’s 20th title (and an unprecedented feat)

Sporting won the 20th national champion title in its history. The 2023/24 championship is the Lions’ second in four years, and their third since 2000.

The lions’ triumph also confirms a new trend in the history of the national championship. Since Benfica’s four-peat in 2017, no club has managed to retain the title of national champion again. An unprecedented period of seven years of alternating champions, with three titles for FC Porto, two for Benfica and two for Sporting.

In the historical balance, Benfica continues to lead, with 38 titles, followed by FC Porto with 30, and Sporting, now with 20. Belenenses and Boavista, each with a trophy, are the only clubs that also have the national championship in the palmares.

This count, remember, was confirmed in 2022 by the General Assembly of the Portuguese Football Federation, after Sporting argued that the titles of the extinct Portuguese Championship should be considered as corresponding to the status of national champion.
