Apparently, Google Chrome should gain even more powerful memory usage control options, according to informant “Leopeva64”. He shared it on X (ex-Twitter) a series of images from a test version of the Google browser, in which we can see a tab with at least three levels – Moderate, Balanced or Maximum.

Technically, Chrome already has a similar feature, which allows you to monitor in real time how much memory the browser uses during a session. However, there are not as many control options compared to what the images in the tweet below show.

Also according to the publication, it seems that Chrome will end up “exchanging” one feature for another: the informant mentions the function of adjust a time limit for a tab to be dismissed – this option appears to have been abandoned in the test version, giving way to stricter memory usage control.

The news appears to be another step by Google towards improving the “usability” of Chrome: later this week, the TudoCelular talked about a possible performance monitoring sidebar called “BrowserHealth”, which allows you to observe all browser virtual resource consumption during a session.

Although both news come from the same informant, it is not clear whether they are directly related: it could be that improved memory control is a part of “Browser Health”, it could be that both are parallel, but separate.

It is also necessary to clarify whether memory usage controls will directly affect the browser resource that already exists: Chrome allows you to free up virtual memory dedicated to tabs that are not in use – as long as these tabs do not contain videos , music or screen sharing currently playing.

Google Chrome was once one of the biggest memory hogs among all browsers, but for a few years now, it has been dedicated to freeing up resources in a user-friendly way. And because the Chromium engine, from which it is based, is an open source project, there are always developers working to optimize the application.

As usual, Google has not commented on the information released so far.
