Greta Thunberg among thousands protesting against Israel at Eurovision

-

A Israel’s participation in the European song contest, the final of which takes place on Saturday in the Swedish city, has been contested given Israel’s behavior in the Gaza Strip, in the context of war with Hamas.

At the end of March, candidates from nine countries, including the Swiss Nemo, one of the favorites, called for a lasting ceasefire.

“It’s unfair. If they can remove the Russian Federation, why can’t they do it with Israel?”, asked a protester, interviewed by AFP.

In 2022, Russian broadcasting companies had been excluded from the European Radio-television Union (EBU), which runs the competition, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Leaving Malmö’s large square, the more than five thousand protesters, according to AFP calculations, paraded along the city’s main pedestrian artery, with Palestinian flags.

Several posters had slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine”, “The EU legitimizes genocide” or “You cannot wash colonialism”.
