JThis Tuesday, João Palhinha gave an extensive interview to the podcast ‘1 PARA 1’, presented by Pedro Pinto, in which he discussed several topics, including the difficulties he had when he was promoted to Sporting’s main team.
“And I won’t hide that there were certain moments when I had doubts that things would go well. I also went through difficult processes and I remember that, in my first years at Sporting and the A team, I spent a year and a half with practically no playing, at the time, with Jorge Jesus, that is, I felt that my role within that team was not important. I remember that I trained the right back, the central defense and I felt that they were not giving me the value I deserved”, The Fulham midfielder began by saying.
“I started to feel like things weren’t going to go away from there. I wasn’t happy, I wasn’t motivated. I felt like they weren’t giving me the value I deserved, even though I was still a kid. To this day, that was the most exhausting period for me, in mental terms, and that made me question more whether anyone would say I would be successful and be able to achieve what I always dreamed of doing. And then when it was this transition from Sporting to Braga, in which I had a loan at Braga for two years and things fortunately they started to go well. And it was then, it was in Braga that I started to believe that I could go far, in other words, the flame lit up inside me again”, he continued.
Regarding this chapter in Minho, João Palhinha considers that it was fundamental to the success he has achieved these days, remembering the importance of Rúben Amorim.
“Then came the national team, then I was also national champion at Sporting. I also won a lot of trophies at Sporting, in the following years that I had there with Rúben. In other words, people got to know a different João from what he had been at Sporting in the first years and me too. If I had left Sporting de Braga for another club, instead of returning to Sporting… I felt that I hadn’t demonstrated what I was really worth at my training club. And I think that was also very important for me, As a person, giving a different answer and showing people what I was worth, and combining that with titles was fantastic”, highlighted the Portuguese international.
“Rúben Amorim? He was always a coach I admired. We always had an excellent connection and he always pushed me up. Even at Sporting, when we were champions, he always showed me what I could achieve and I always wanted I was with him that first year”, he highlighted.
Regarding the current edition of the I Liga, he bets on Sporting: “I think Sporting is the team that plays best and dominates the game in Portugal. I haven’t seen any team in Portugal yet that can dominate the game against Sporting and I think that if If they continue like this, it seems to me that the title will be green and white again this year. Gyokeres is explosive, powerful and irreverent.”
