The women’s football championship is in full swing. Benfica and Sporting won and postponed the title decision until next weekend. The two teams separated by two points heading into the final round of the championship.

Today, three-time national champion Benfica, who leads the competition with 53 points, won on their visit to Valadares Gaia (1-0). Chandra Davidson was once again decisive. The Canadian had already scored the goal that gave Benfica the League Cup against Sporting and yesterday scored the winning goal for the Eagles in the 44th minute.

Sporting entered the field after knowing their rival’s result and secured a quiet victory at Atlético Ouriense (3-0), with goals from Olívia Smith (27 minutes), Joana Martins (32) and Ana Capeta (35) . The Lionesses thus recovered in the best possible way the disappointment of not winning the League Cup in the middle of the week (against Benfica).

With two more points than Sporting, in the 22nd and final round, Filipa Patão’s team “only” has to achieve the same result as Sporting to secure their fourth national championship. Both have equally difficult duels. The red team will face Racing Power, third in the championship (and opponents of the Portuguese Cup final), while Sporting visits Damaiense, fourth in the BPI League.

A scenario of equal equality, which could happen if Sporting wins and Benfica draws, will give the title to Mariana Cabral’s team, which has the better in direct confrontation, as they won both games, both 3-1. Something that reflects the increase in competitiveness for the Alvalade side, which has been looking for a return to the titles for five seasons. The last time the Leo team lifted the trophy was in 2017-18, a year before the Eagles arrived on the scene and dominated the championship.
