Will Amorim ‘fatten’ the list of champions or will Sporting maintain the ‘Line’?

-

Ohe last few days were intense celebrations for Sporting. With Benfica’s defeat at Famalicão’s home, the lions rose to the highest place in the Portuguese championship and achieved their 20th national championship title.

With the main objective in his pocket, Rúben Amorim knows that, by the end of the season, there will be two more games in the I Liga, which, in practical terms, will serve to reach records… before the decisive game against FC Porto. It will be at the Estádio do Jamor that the green and whites will be able to reach a double that has not been achieved for over 20 years.

In this sense, and with the Portuguese Cup final in his sights, Rúben Amorim will be able to spare players for the duel against FC Porto, which will increase the already extensive list of elements that celebrated the title of national champion last Sunday. Next comes the duel against Estoril, next Saturday, in which the lions may or may not maintain the ‘Line’.

26 were champions, but the list can grow

What remains in the history of the 2023/24 edition of the Portuguese championship is that there are 26 footballers who, so far, have become champions with Sporting. But this is a list that could be ‘thickened’ in duels against Estoril-Praia and Desportivo de Chaves.

Diogo Pinto he should even be the next to join this ‘club’, given that he should be the starter in Sporting’s nets on Saturday’s trip to Amoreira. Keeping an eye on an opportunity is also Francisco Silvawho must sit on the substitutes bench.

But there are other footballers trained in Alcochete with an eye on adding a few minutes in the last two games of the I League and, perhaps, in the final of the Portuguese Cup. Diogo Travassos, Chico Lamba, João Muniz, Leonardo Barroso, Tiago Ferreira, Rafael Nel It is Geovany Quenda They are regular options in the main team’s training sessions and could have that ‘goodness’ from Rúben Amorim in the remaining matches.

12 players repeated the championship, 14 were debutants

If we look at the list of players who celebrated the title last Sunday, you can see that 12 repeated the success achieved in 2021, in Rúben Amorim’s second season serving the green and whites. Goalkeeper Antonio Adán, defenders Sebastián Coates, Matheus Reis, Gonçalo Inácio, Eduardo Quaresma, Nuno Santos and Luís Neto, midfielders Daniel Bragança and Dário Essugo, and forwards Pedro Gonçalves and Paulinho had already been champions with Sporting in 2020 /21

On the other hand, there are 14 players who enjoyed their first title with a lion on their chest, such as Gyokeres, Hjulmand, Trincão, Morita, Fresneda, Esgaio, St. Juste, Diomande, Geny Catamo, Franco Israel, Marcus Edwards, Koindredi, Afonso Moreira, Mateus Fernandes and Rafael Pontelo.

And there is also the curiosity that Dário Essugo (now on loan to Desportivo de Chaves), Afonso Moreira (on loan to Gil Vicente) and Mateus Fernandes (wearing the Estoril shirt) are also national champions, as a result of the few minutes they had in the first half of the season in Alvalade.
