Ubuntu, a Linux-based operating system, received a new version through a recent update. Canonical, responsible for its creation, announced that the version number is 24.04 and who previously had “Noble Numbat” as his codename. What’s new are frame pointers set by default for CPU profiling and debugging.

Despite being used by common users, Ubuntu is widely used by developers, software engineers and other types of IT professionals who need a system with a good debugging processfor example.

As frame pointers enabled by default for 64-bit architecture is one of the main key points of the update, Canonical decided to call Brendan Gregg, a computer performance expert and member of Intel, to better explain the importance of this improvement for the operating system:

Frame pointers allow for more complete CPU profiling and off-CPU profiling. The performance gains these can provide far outweigh the comparatively small loss in performance. Ubuntu enabling frame pointers by default will be a huge win for performance engineering and the default developer experience.

The new Ubuntu 24.04 LTS version now has full support for .NET 8, the most up-to-date version of Microsoft’s open source development framework. Microsoft’s current corporate vice president of Azure Cloud Native, Jeremy Winter, even commented on the importance of the operating system:

Ubuntu is an endorsed Linux distribution on Microsoft Azure and an important component for many of Microsoft’s technologies, including .NET, Windows Subsystem for Linux, Azure Kubernetes service, and Azure Confidential Computing. Microsoft and Canonical have a close engineering relationship that covers everything from update infrastructure in Azure to developer tools, most notably .NET 8, which has been part of the Noble Numbat release since day one.

Canonical also released a 1 minute and 25 second video for the launch of its Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and some of what’s new:

“>

Ubuntu Pro subscribers who purchase Legacy Support from this new OS version will receive up to 12 years of guaranteed updates and support for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. At launch, Noble Numbat will also feature up to five years of free support through the main Ubuntu repository.

In recent tests, the Ubuntu surpassed Windows 11 on Framework laptops. Furthermore, Canonical, in partnership with Qualcomm, has planned to bring the operating system to the corporate AI environment.
