According to a recent leak published on the Chinese social network Bilibili, an internal Nintendo source has revealed details about the Switch 2, including an updated proprietary reader. According to user MOBPAD, cartridges from the original Switch will be compatible with the new slot, but cartridges from Switch 2 cannot be used in the old reader.
Furthermore, the leaker suggested that the new console would have a larger 8-inch screen and new magnetic-docking joy-cons, similar to the design that Lenovo used in the Legion Go.
It’s unclear how physical games will be backwards compatible between the two versions of the Switch, as Nintendo has already adopted this approach in different ways on previous consoles.
Backwards compatible slot or additional port
In the generational migration from the GameBoy Color to the GameBoy Advance, Nintendo used the same port format for different cartridges, even with the same pinout, only changing the voltage and addressing.

In the Nintendo DS, the company chose to incorporate an additional slot for GBA games to ensure backwards compatibility, even using a completely new cartridge for the console’s original games. The extra port was removed on the 3DS, but it ensured that Advance games survived until the launch of the Virtual Console.
It is not clear which of the two strategies will be adopted on the Nintendo Switch 2, but Nintendo itself has already confirmed that the original Switch’s digital library will be fully transferable to the new console through the Nintendo Account.
